Project 4.9 Summary:
The proposed study accomplishes a task for a project sponsored by Maine DOT, titled โAnalysis of Covid-19 and travel in Maine (ACTIME).โ The federal census, traffic count stations and regional phone-based travel surveys have been the traditional sources of data used to study and quantify traffic volumes by transportation planning authorities. The advent of GPS and cellphone location-based data collected by third parties are being used to create new data sources for estimating travel behavior on a continuous basis. Recently, Maine Turnpike Authority (MTA) and Maine Department of Transportation (MDOT) purchased a subscription of Streetlight Insightยฎ Metrics. Maine DOT is very interested in StreetLight as a tool for obtaining transportation data traditionally collected by more labor-intensive means. A major question yet to answer for Maine DOT is to explore at what extent StreetLight can reduce Maine DOTโs reliance on short-duration counts for volumes and turning movements. The proposed project will support Maine DOT and the ACTIME project by validating the accuracy of Streetlight Insightยฎ Metrics AADT data using data collected at permanent and temporary count stations in Maine..
